Accent Tag! You're It.

The world has gone loopy. A birmingham accent described as beautiful?!?
Americans love British accents. We hate our own.
When he said "water".... I almost died.

I'd love to get my friend Niall on here. He calls me up some evenings and I just drift away for a while on an Irish accent.
Yum.
I also liked how Napoleon said "It's a sunny daee" and "I apologize about the loight." And also how he said his own name.
I also love the Brummie accent. But then I like all accents, considering I have a shit one.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

OK, here's mine. My webcam doesn't work (and nobody wants a heart attack) so I made an MP3. Get it here.
Obviously English is not my mother tongue so my accent probably wavers between the British "King's English" that I was taught in school, the South African English I spoke for 3 years when I lived there, and all the different types of American English slang that TV, movies, and music exposed me to for over half a century. And a smattering of Ozzie English. "Enjoy". RE: Accent Tag! You're It.

Similarly, when I was overseas, I layed on the drawl thicker than my cousin Cletus. The females ate it up, I may as well have been dripping honey from my lips. Probably has something to do with that whole "sense of the exotic" that changes as quickly as you change state lines.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Yep, I find my accent automatically, and unconsciously, changes to accomodate the situation or company. And, like with e.g. tennis, my 'game' gets better or worse dependent on my 'opponent'. When I'm speaking English with a Pakistani or Argentinian, for instance, my English is almost as atrocious as theirs. But put me in a company with Oxford scholars and they'll peg me as from Cambridge... |
