IPM for the Home Garden.

IPM for the Home Garden.
Hehehe, gotta start blasting the forums with gardening posts, it's just that time of the year. To all of the gardeners out there, have you ever considered writing an IPM Plan (Integrated Pest Management), or do you already have a system that could be closely called IPM? IPM is standard practice for large farms, and even though the standard practices for large farms are often incompatible with the home garden, this is not one of those occasions. Large producers have a buffer against pests that we do not, unbelievably large numbers of plants. To the home gardener, the loss of one tomato vine can translate to a 50-100% loss. How many times have you scrambled to the garden center to put out a fire, terrified that you're biggest yielding cultivar has already been damaged beyond all repair? IPM is the answer!

What are the common pests in your area, do you plant a large number of one family of plants susceptible to the same diseases or prone to the same pests? How much do you know about these pests and diseases? Have you had trouble with disease or pests in the past? Let's geek out about it!
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

My worst enemy was Japanese beetles to my roses...then I moved to NC.

Haven't had a real problem since. None of the veggies suffered from anything except the heat.

I mean, no one was growin' anything but weeds here, so maybe they just haven't caught on. My azaleas lost it to a thirsty maple and mites, and my phlox suffered the mites too, but we're relatively pest free at this house - not even vermin really...not with the feral cats around. I do get aphids, but not so bad. You have this whole thing planned out. I couldn't eat my crops fast enough. That's what you get with fallow ground.

My plans are just long lists of things that go wrong. Consider the religious tomato experiment..lol.

I've added a little doohicky I suspect to be complete and utter garbage to my IPM this year. A little solar powered "ultra-sonic" deterrent. Says it scares off all the critters (probably ghosts too). I'm in it for the giggles.

I'm measuring it against the yardstick of some extremely smart squirrels. They got probably 70% of my tomatoes, and half of my watermelons last year.

I suppose I'll not argue about those feral cats...
