Messier 101
March 26, 2012 at 3:11 pm
Siunce I've been getting better at processing my astrophotographs, and since I have been low on gas fund to go to the observatory lately, I've been reprocessing some of my photos from last year. Here is a reprocessed photo I took in February of last year of Messier 101, the Pinwheel galaxy, Ursa Major:
Enjoy

Absolutely. That's why I've a fondness for astronomy; it's one of the few fields of science in which amateurs can still make important contributions. I wish I had the equipment to be able to do this stuff.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Same here Stimbo.
Just have to content myself with looking at the night sky and trying (unsuccessfully at times) to name the stars and constellations.

Not my Pleiades. It has one feature that stops me cold in my tracks every time I try to image it with my newtonian scope. The main stars are so bright that the diffraction spikes (which are common with newtonian scopes) overwhelm the image and turn it into a spaghetti mess. It is best imaged with a refractor, though I do have access to the clubs' imaging refractor. I might try that next winter (if no one finds out because I refuse to use their so-caled professional camera, which really is crap). On another note. I just got back from the observatory and managed to image Messier 51, the Whirlpool Galaxy (which is actually two galaxies in the process of merging). I will post the image in new thread.

You should join your local astronomy club. I would bet they have equipment they would let you use. We have lots of scopes available for our members to use.
