Christians walk out during criticism of the Bible
April 29, 2012 at 8:32 am
(This post was last modified: April 29, 2012 at 8:33 am by The Heff.)
In this video, Christians walk out on Dan Savage (the founder of the It Gets Better project) as he criticises the Bible. Regardless of what you believe (whether you believe in God or not), I cannot see why these Christians would not hear him out. He's voicing an opinion on the way that he, and others of a homosexual preference, are treated by the church and the way in which other aspects of the Bible have all but been abandoned, yet this one has not.
To the theists, particularly Christians,... Would you walk out on him? Would you rather not hear him out understand his point of view?
Are the views of homosexuality different in different areas of the world (i.e. Christians in Europe have a different view on this than Christians in the US?).
I respect you too much to believe that you could possibly hold those ridiculous beliefs. - Richard Dawkins, 2012

They should have listened, i would have.
Love your neighbor as yourself; whatever you want others to do for you, do so for them; love your enemies; Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all; A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. This doesn't seem to be how we handle people and their differences, but i guess that's Jesus' fault because he didn't say anything about it.(ultra mega sarcasm)
Also what we know about slavery from our brutal, intentional, lazy, past is that of what we did to the African Americans. What the bible is speaking of and even what we have today is maid, house keeper. It was a job.

Some Christians just can't stand to hear their bible criticized in any way, even the really shitty parts.

I think that nowadays, hatred for homosexuals would be more of a culturally ingrained thing and the bible is just a convenient excuse. India, for example, is a predominantly Hindu society and Hindu scriptures say very little about homosexuality - one way or another. Still, the law and the cultural hangover from the British rule has still left an aversion for it, even though the British themselves have moved past it.

It's true that your interpretation of the bible is really a litmus test for your own morals.

It wasn't directed at you specifically, no. I was just adding onto the point that the bible is used by people to excuse already present prejudices.
