I wouldn't say that to the parents. That would be mean.
Having a functioning brain stem (what causes the heart to beat, lungs to breath and regulates BP) and a forebrain means one isn't a person? You sure have an odd definition of person. Once again I will say if you are so sure 4 year old Nicholas isn't a person, go tell his parents. Fact is he is legally a person and all your mental posturing isn't going to change that.
He's basically a plant, man.

Just because it isn't a happy thought doesn't mean it isn't true. Can I email them instead?

If you can find their email address go right ahead. Tell me, if you think he is a plant, what is your definition of a human (person).
Paul, same question for you.

He is a human in the sense that he is of the same species we are. However, he lacks cognitive thought and conscious awareness. He's an empty vessel, a ship with no captain.

He doesn't lack awareness. Once again, the question I asked was what is your definition of a human (person).

I gave you my answer, he is a human in body but not in mind. How is he aware of himself? Perhaps I misunderstood his condition?

wow. sometimes i wonder if sticking by a stance is worth winning an argument when it comes to something as this. so is that child (if i can even call him that, if he's only a machine or plant) sentient then, or isn't that a question?

Define sentient. If you mean conscious, yes he is sentient. If you mean able to feel, no but by that criteria there are many people that wouldn't be considered sentient (and many more that would only be considered part sentient). Still, the question has been asked. How do you define a person?

^That.
Without the ability to think or reason or feel emotions... he is little more than a biological support system with nothing to support. It isn't my fault that he was born that way... and I wouldn't say such things to his parents, because I am not a mean person.
That's my view and now I am just repeating it. I'm not asking you to agree and I'm not going to continue expressing the same thing over and over, so... I'm out.
