Since I have never read more than a few words of the Qu'ran, can you post some of the verses demanding that alocohol not be consumed?

This was one of several reasons I did not pursue Islam....I did go through Ramadan years ago and celebrated the end by getting drunk....one Moslem never looked at me the same way again. That was when I decided Islam was not the way for me.

So it begs the question. Can one be Moslem and still drink?

I don't have particular verses for you but all I know from when I was a muslim is that they believe its a serious "sin" so they would probably say your are not "true believer" for drinking. Lol its kinda funny how Allah forbids muslims to drink and then promises to reward them with the sweetest wine in heaven...how are people supposed to know the wine in heaven is amazing if they don't have anything to compare it to?

Indeed. My ex went back to the Church after we had been marred for 8 years. I would always go to the social functions. I especially enjoyed the annual parish dinner. The parish priest was the MC (only the once) He got pissed and started telling really dirty jokes.

My favourite memory is the "St Paul's Parish First Annual Mens' International Beer Tasting Evening". I kid you not. A couple of parishioners owned liquor stores. It was $15 a head, all the beer you could drink and fantastic sammies made by BLOKES! I counted about 20 different kinds of beer.Sadly, I only managed to try about half as I didn't want to seem greedy or risk throwing up on the archbishop who was also present. (it's a rare Catholic priest who will miss a free piss up)

My friend, you have far more restraint than I.

RE: Alcohol
oh please, Muslims are the biggest hypocrites in the world, come to Bahrain in weekends, you'll see half the population drunk in bars & clubs, while half the Saudi population just crossed the borders to join the party, of course the Saudis don't stop there, they bang a prostitute or two before going home, good thing Bahrainis are smart & never pay for sex.

you know what I heard once when I was in Saudi? that when a Saudi propose to a woman in there, her family's first question would be whether he goes to Bahrain or not, if he does, they'll never accept him, any Saudi that goes to Bahrain is a bad Muslim according to them.

I don't know which part is funnier than the other.

it would show you how big of hypocrites they are, during the day, around their family/religious leaders, they'll act all holier than thou, when the night hits they turn the switch, its unknown to me how the older generation is completely oblivious to this, half of them don't even know alcohol exists in Bahrain, & some of the other half thinks those that drink smuggle alcohol because its illegal.

lol, its actually the opposite, as soon as you step foot in a club, every Bahraini that drinks or goes clubbin' that knows you will know that you did. On the other hand, you could have sex on public malls on live TV & your parents (& religious leaders) would still never find out.

It's not funny, it's sad.

A life of refusing alcohol, of not knowing it's pleasure, on the off chance that heaven might be real.

A waste of a life - but, that's religion for you.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

RE: Alcohol
A Pakistani Muslim I knew a few years ago drank quite regularly.

When I asked if that wasn't against his religion he told me that it was only haram if it got to mind altering levels, i.e you got pissed.

It's all down to interpretation.
