You Be is cute! What a name, too.

I'm not much of a cat person, but your kittehs could make me a convert!

He came with the name.  A coworker of mine can't ever remember it when I bring him in but knows it has something to do with a command so she always asks things like "His name is Sit, right?  Or Come?" :p

He also goes by Scooby, Scooba, Scoober, Youber, You-be-doo and Scooby-doo.  My family can't have a pet unless the name can be mangled into at least 4 nicknames. Smile

They're precious.

They looooove going outside (the leash training actually makes it easier to catch them when they escape), they target, they stand and they give me high fives.  We've been working on sit but not with the kind of gusto you need to actually train them, it's been more of a "Hey, you sat and waited for your treat instead of biting my fingers off trying to get it from me!  You get a reward!"

Cats are more willful than dogs but that doesn't mean they're untrainable.  You can teach them to do most everything a dog will do, it's just about socialization and building the trust.

Riley is actually in the midst of developing a superstition, I think.  Whenever I get the food out to feed them he waits by the food tray, then takes off counter-clockwise through the living room, in through the other entrance to the kitchen and back to his food tray.  By the time he does that his food is ready and he gets to eat. :p

Vader does this. Intentionally and with malice. Our cat boxes are in the mud room, which to get to, they must go through the living room, dining room and kitchen. I'm in the living room and OMG. I'm gonna die!

The smell is strong in that one.

Is it me or does he look like he's levitating? Kudos for that!

I have found with my kitties, if they eat the same food, not much in table scraps or treats, they don't stink it up so much. When I switch food... ewww.. watch out! Undecided

I have switched my fur-kids over to a healthier brand. More expensive? Yes. Do they eat as much? Nope. And it's grain free but has extra protein in it. I've got one cat turning 10 years old in June. Another just turned 6 and one is 8 years old. All senior kitties. Vader, the middle child runs around like a kitten and loves to chase the other two but he has an issue of destroying my furniture. I just found Soft Paws at Petcock online for 41% off so I jumped at the chance to get them. Used them before on other cats and they work really well. Hopefully this will curtail his clawing and scratching everything.

My boys get raw food (purchased or homemade - it's not that scary, really) occasionally, and it can help with dietary issues like stinky poo.  I try to get them grain-free stuff as often as I can, but it's so damned expensive that it's not feasible as their everyday, every meal food.  I avoid fish-based food due to the contaminants and heavy-metals, but they occasionally get fish treats.

... Petcock?

I've never used soft paws myself.  Found them interesting, just never tried them.  I clip my boyz claws and they generally don't scratch my furniture.  They're good about confining that to the cat trees. Smile

Tanner gets PureBalance, usually the Lamb and Peas or Chicken and Brown Rice, but occasionally the Salmon or Buffalo Grain Free stuff. I'd always get the Grain Free, but they never carry the 30# bags of it, and I end up buying two 11# bags for more money and 8# less food.

We use Purrfect Bistro by Merrick. It's grain free and we buy the Healthy Senior Recipe. So far I'm very impressed with it.

Merrick is a solid brand. 4-5 stars. I can't afford big dog sized bags from them, though. A 30# bag of Merrick or Acana is $80-$100. Lasts about 3 weeks.

I have a dumb smartphone. It has a mind of its own. I text my other half when he's at work Big Grin

The bag we have is a 12lb. bag. It was on sale at PETCO three weeks ago. I have another week's worth left in the bag. Not bad for three cats, considering they were eating up an 18lb bag of purina crap in less than a month's time. I think I paid $25 for it. Now that I've seen the results and what it's done for the babies, I'm going to stick with it. They are totally worth it.

I've done a lot of work trying to educate myself on what the best food is to feed a cat and corresponded with some of the people who are posting about feline nutrition and advocating certain diets and these are my take-aways:

  1. 1) Dry food won't do jack shit for dental health unless they actually chew the kibbles (and most cats don't) so don't use that as an excuse.  Brush their teeth, or find another way to maintain dental health.
  1. 2) A BARF diet, or other raw diet, might be the best in terms of health, but if you can't afford it:
  1. 3) Feed them a wet food (and maintain dental health by brushing or some other method)
  1. 4) Cats should not get food with corn or grain fillers; they are obligate carnivores and have no business eating food with corn or grains as the #1 ingredient.
  1. 5) Fish-based foods are not good for cats because of the contaminants and heavy-metals.  If you feed your cat fish limit it to occasional treats, don't include it in every day meals.
I'm limited by budget as to what I can feed my cats, but I try to feed them high-quality, animal-protein-based, grain-free wet foods, with grain-free kibbles as treats, as often as I can.  I don't always achieve that, but when I have to go to cheaper brands, I read the labels and get ones that have animal proteins as the top ingredients.
