Smirking is usually involuntarily and often follows someone saying something so stupid it's hard to believe that they really believe it. Smirking thresholds vary. I didn't see Dawkins appearance on O'Reilly, but I can easily see myelf smirking at O'Reilly's understanding of science. It may not be kind, but it's honest.

Perhaps atheists smirk because we have come to see life for the big, cosmic joke that it is. We, as humans, seem to have the struggle to find meaning built into our DNA, and when searching for that meaning we pulled back the curtian to find that no wizard is at the controls. The sane person smirks at that, becuase not to would drive that person insane.

A smirk is a misleading and subtle nonverbal communication. It's hard to judge exactly what a smirk means without a context, additional bodily movements or micro-expressions.

It can mean concealed amusement, contempt or smug confidence. If a smirk is in the form of a micro-expression, meaning it's subtle and happening almost too fast to notice, it's indicative that the person has just knowingly lied.
