I'm quite content with attributing their behavior to "stupidity." Or "irrationality," both are equally damning.

I say this woman was a true mother, she brought into this world one she loved, what greater sacrifice can one make than to give their life for another. And for the ignorant here, who's to say she would have beat the cancer, it was highly aggressive and apparently it was close to her brain, if not in her brain since she lost her sight. The father will express to this child what a brave thing she did, she gave birth to you, our beautiful boy, who we both love, even though she is not with us now. She is with us through you my son.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

I'm with GC on this one. When you cut away the religious crap, she made the conscious decision to give the child she very much wanted a chance at the life she herself was unlikely to get because of the cancer. Nothing to do with the church, just love for her child. Could I have made the same choice? I don't know, but I very much respect her choice. If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71.
So she sacrificed herself to save her son. How can you be angry? She may have died either way, but now she protected a new life. I think it is quite lovely: more than lovely, it is inspiring.
Catholicism does allow indirect abortions, so she was not forced to do this. She went above and beyond so that way her child could have a chance at life and vowed to continue to pray for her children even in Heaven. A mother's love is something very moving and beautiful for me. She bore that suffering out of love. If you want to credit that to her Christian faith, well then by all means.
Mary Immaculate, star of the morning
Chosen before the creation began Chosen to bring for your bridal adorning Woe to the serpent and rescue to man. Sinners, we honor your sinless perfection; Fallen and weak, for your pity we plead; Grand us the shield of your sovereign protection, Measure your aid by the depth of our need. Bend from your throne at the voice of our crying, Bend to this earth which your footsteps have trod; Stretch out your arms to us, living and dying, Mary Immaculate, Mother of God. |
