Good question about life
July 10, 2012 at 1:04 am
I'm not a christian myself, but I got a pretty good question recently that I was not able to answer with satisfaction. So I registered here in hope of getting some help with this.
-Why is is that we just start breathing on our own? There has to be some sort of force in the universe that activates this.

One of those rare moments that the answer is more interesting than the question.

Actually, organisms which do not start breathing at birth, die. Natural selection thus prevents them from passing on those faulty genes.

Don't know.

-Evidence?
Argument from incredulity.

This was my answer too, but it feels incomplete.

It doesn't matter what you 'feel'. Did you even bother to read Rhythm's article? It explained the process quite well. If you 'feel' that something is missing after knowing that, go out and make a study.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

I like this. Really informative. but we still have a little problem.
"With delivery, the lifeline of the umbilical cord is severed. Air hunger develops, and a reflex causes the newborn child to gasp for air. "
How do you explain this reflex more detailed then just:
-If we are born without that reflex we don't breath and die, so the acquirement for life, is to have it.

'Don't know' is not an acceptable answer when discussion with somebody who thinks they have all the answers.
But thanks to the other members I know have a more defied answer to give.
To everyone:
Is it safe to assume that us breathing air is due to evolution. Something drew us up on land basically. Food, safety, less competition for resources and so on.

You sound a lot like Hopmike. Assuming that you aren't Hopmike...
You registered at AF, not to find an answer to your biological question, but to proclaim that the act of breathing requires some supernatural activation.
I fart in your general direction...

Is your question : how did organisms evolve to utilise oxygen?
Surely an infants birth reflex works due to it's biological programming that includes breathing. Taking a first breath isn't mysterious, it's an inevitable step of development?
