Al Ghazali's theology gave birth to what we now call Islamic fundamentalism. Prior to Al Ghazali Arabs were at the forefront of scientific discovery; after, there is the sound of crickets. I disagree, all al-ghazali really did was say, that all non islamic philosophers, scientists, etc. are not to be regarded over any muslim. The printing press however led to the renaissance, most islamic leaders banned re-producing the quran, using the printing press and this supposedly set off a "chain-reaction" of anti-science/invention throughout the entire muslim empire from morrocco to indonesia. Coincidentally, this happened right before the Catholic Spanish discovered America. Who knows..... if it wasn't for the printing press the europeans may have never have discovered the Americas. |
