Why hasn't Romney been made accountable for these questionable campaign contributions?

*wink wink* "Don't worry Mit, laws don't apply to us. We're US politicians, and it's our own little club."

Now as I understand this story, it is only alleged that these contributions were made, but even if that's the case, shouldn't EVERY dime of campaign contributions be accounted for??

That's becuase colbert's not an asshole who's "bending the law" I think he's the one who created the term "Spooky PAC's" anyway, which is basically unidentfiable money from anywhere or anyone.

It seems obvious to me that the USA would not want presidential candidates supported by foreign influence. Seems like that could open quite the can of worms with a president that was loyal to a hostile foreign regime. Undecided

Federal Election Commission Wrote:The ban on political contributions and expenditures by foreign nationals was first enacted in 1966 as part of the amendments to the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), an "internal security" statute. The goal of the FARA was to minimize foreign intervention in U.S. elections by establishing a series of limitations on foreign nationals. These included registration requirements for the agents of foreign principals and a general prohibition on political contributions by foreign nationals. In 1974, the prohibition was incorporated into the Federal Election Campaign Act (the FECA), [HTML] [PDF] giving the Federal Election Commission (FEC) jurisdiction over its enforcement and interpretation.

This brochure has been developed to help clarify the rules regarding the political activity of foreign nationals; however, it is not intended to provide an exhaustive discussion of the election law. If you have any questions after reading this, please contact the FEC in Washington, D.C., at 1-800-424-9530 or 202-694-1100. Members of the press should contact the FEC Press Office at 202-694-1220 or at the toll free number listed above.

Except where otherwise noted, all citations refer to the Act and FEC regulations. Advisory Opinions (AOs) issued by the Commission are also cited.
The Prohibition

The Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) prohibits any foreign national from contributing, donating or spending funds in connection with any federal, state, or local election in the United States, either directly or indirectly. It is also unlawful to help foreign nationals violate that ban or to solicit, receive or accept contributions or donations from them. Persons who knowingly and willfully engage in these activities may be subject to fines and/or imprisonment.
Who is a Foreign National?

The following groups and individuals are considered "foreign nationals" and are, therefore, subject to the prohibition:

Foreign governments;
Foreign political parties;
Foreign corporations;
Foreign associations;
Foreign partnerships;
Individuals with foreign citizenship; and
Immigrants who do not have a "green card."

So the questions remains: Why has he not been held accountable?

Citizens United allows it, and it was upheld by a 5-4 vote in the supreme court. This crap is just another Ron Paul internet spam campaign to spread rumors, in order to garner support for his stupid ass group, the "libertarians". Do you really think the multi-biillion dollar Romney campaign would make a mistake like taking a small amount of money illegally thereby ending his presidential bid? Who would run against Obama, if it were true?
Quote:Courts and the FEC almost immediately started gnawing at the new law. And in recent years, three court decisions rolled back many of the limits on special-interest groups and potentially opened the door to foreign governments or corporations spending freely on campaigns through U.S. corporations they control. (FEC regulations ban foreign nationals from contributing, but they say nothing about a foreign corporation donating money through a U.S.-operated subsidiary.)

False.

New York Times Wrote:Supreme Court Retains Ban on Foreign Campaign Donations
By JOHN H. CUSHMAN JR.

In a terse four words, the Supreme Court on Monday issued an order upholding prohibitions against foreigners making contributions to influence American elections.

The decision clamped shut an opening that some thought the court had created two years ago in its Citizens United decision, when it relaxed campaign-finance limits on corporations and labor unions. On Monday the Supreme Court, upholding a lower court’s decision in Bluman, et al., v. Federal Election Commission, refused to extend its reasoning in Citizens United to cover foreigners living temporarily here.

Foreign nationals, other than lawful permanent residents, are completely banned from donating to candidates or parties, or making independent expenditures in federal, state or local elections.

The Supreme Court’s order did not discuss the merits or suggest that there was any dissent among the justices.

I don't subscribe to any political party, but you can be damn sure I'd vote for Ron Paul LONG before I voted for that asshat Mit Romney. That guy has got a backbone made of jello and make no doubt about it, the man is bought and paid for. He has never and will never have this country in his best interest - which is why he is the biggest flop-flopping candidate in history.
