DayZ
DayZ is the multiplayer mod for ARMA 2 that has gained a following of millions of players. There are even plans to make it standalone in the distant future.
I was sceptical at first but after trying it out I can confirm its extremely addictive and immensely enjoyable.
You start at a random spawn with no weapons or items except for some painkillers, a bandage and a torch in a massive zombie infested map. You need to eat, drink and find supplies to survive and use stealth to infiltrate towns and evade the infected. The day and night cycle is in-synch with whatever nationality the server is. Once you're dead you start from scratch.
The only thing more dangerous than the infected are the players as there is nothing to stop people turning bandit and robbing/killing other players. There is also nothing to stop you teaming up with others. It really tests human nature as teamwork really does involve a huge amount of trust that they won't just turn around and kill you for your supplies. When you bump into someone it really is nerve racking.

Anyway, just saying I recommend it. Give it a go. I guarantee you'll be surprised by how much fun it is.

Sounds pretty fucking good.

If the players are anything like they are on Red Dead Redemption when you bump into them on multiplayer, I expect I won't be making any friends. Seems human nature is to shoot your horse and try and kill you.

Sounds a lot like "The Dead Linger".

They're worse Nap, seriously. Imagine a server of up to 100 players who can't communicate unless they're face to face. All of them nervous and on edge because they know at anytime they could get jumped by infected or sniped by a greedy bandit over a can of beans. If you get killed all the weapons you've found, the backpacks, supplies, kill count. All of it gone.
Making friends is near impossible, don't even try. Most people will shoot you as soon as look at you. At the same time being a lone wolf is really hard because if you lose blood you need to bandage up and gain it back slowly by finding rare morsels of food over time but the easiest and quickest way is a blood transfusion... which you need another player for.

I've taken to looking for the rare empty or low population servers that work, managed to get a ghillie suit, a crossbow, a pistol, a massive backpack and some flasks. Most people have to turn bandit to get that in one playthrough, I've been really lucky. Once I've gotten some night vision goggles I'm heading north and staying there. Cities are fucking death traps.

I was kind of hoping someone on this forum might have a private server set up. The whole lone wolf thing has worked for me so far but not without alot of close calls.

Looks like a game that would really be ruined by a coordinated team of hostile buddies emulating r/w fire team drills ingame. Are the recoil and firing mechanics arcade style ala CS or do they at least make an attempt at realism?
(I've got a bunch of minecraft buds that are trying to get me to play- considering it- but I'm not sure my PC can handle it.)
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Damn it really sounds fun. It would be mega awesome to play along with a couple of close buddies and to watch each other's backs. Like you say, sounds like it really does a good job of simulating that interaction if you were actually in a post-apocalyptic zombie land.

I like Fallout for that kind of gameplay in a way, but it's only single player, so it's not really the same sense of nervousness when you come across other life forms. Tongue
