Tags not working?

One of the bold tags wasn't working for me earlier today: I could make some parts of my post bold but no matter how many times I tried to make a particular word bold, it wouldn't work. I re-did it and re-did it and re-did it and checked and checked and checked and it still didn't work. I then did exactly the same thing but changed it to italics and it would somehow change to that, so I changed the bold bits to italics too for consistency. Weird.
