Given that Windows 8 has been panned almost universally, and support for Windows 7 (and indeed Vista) still exists, I'd stick with whatever you have now. There is no need to upgrade; indeed, since this is new software, it is more likely there will be undiscovered security vulnerabilities.

I've got Windows 7 on my laptop but I'm still using Windows XP on my main desktop machine. I've never seen any reason to upgrade it. Other than the touch screen stuff, what's the reason to upgrade, other than being a pseudo-hipster following the crowd?

I would still be on Windoze 98, but some of the software I need to use requires '.net' in XP.

I'm told by others that there are a lot of nice touches, rather than major advancements. (Like using Windows search from the Start menu to launch programs.) There are a few internal improvements, but nothing major. I've been using XP (and 2k) and just invested in a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate for my desktop. Other than the so called nice touches, the only thing XP doesn't do that 7 does do, off the top of my head, is support TRIM on SSDs. (It also has Japanese and Chinese speech recognition which XP lacks, but that's not a feature of general appeal.)

The main reason to upgrade Windows XP is the support has run out. Microsoft won't be fixing any newly discovered vulnerabilities or bugs. Application developers will also move away from XP for the same reasons (and due to the cost of developing / testing on four Windows variants).
