I wish there wasn't a rating system of posts at all but if it's going to be in, keeping negative rating out is a good thing. An unpopular opinion isn't always dumb but with negative ratings, they become indistinguishable from one another.

I wish there was a dislike button on Facebook! We were warned of speech tweaking to only allow for positive ideas to be shared with newspeak and the constant redaction of negative words from the english language in the book 1984. From the wiki on newspeak:

Quote:words with negative meanings are removed as redundant, so "bad" becomes "ungood"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspeak

So I can't kudon't a post to let someone know I think ill of thier post, nor can I neg rep them to show that they are a repugnant entity, much like I can't dislike a post on Facebook. I can only sit back an "not like" the hell out of something I find scathingly terrible, and I find that double plus ungood!

I think you might be on to something. You know how people are always asking for a 'dislike' option on FB? Perhaps we could do a kudos and a dislike button for posts... But I don't like the idea of giving negative rep points.

A bad post is usually called out and some make it to the thread of shame. I see no need to have a 'dislike' button as I believe that would get abused and eventually be of little value, assuming of course, that it had any value from the start.

If I dislike a post, I will respond and this response qualifies the 'dislike'.

I would get 'NINTENDO" finger with a 'dislike' button

I was on a forum one time that had a rate up/rate down system and you could set up your profile to only view posts with a positive rating, or only above -5 or something like that. It was great because the dumb or obnoxious got voted out of existence effectively. I eventually switched my profile to view all because I like knowing the worst things people post.

Valid point, but sometimes I'd rather just let the poster know their post was bad and they should feel bad and move on, not get into an argument over it.

True enough, may perhaps it could be set up on a trial and see if it can work without abuse, but I see thousands of dislikes coming.

I could be wrong. I was wrong once, I thought I was mistaken, but turned out, I was not.

Before implementing it, I'd be curious what everyone else thought of the idea. If the overwhelming majority is no, I'd be cool with that. Democracy at work Tongue

That's fucking horrible. Discussion boards don't work when parts of the discussion are removed for some parties. This is exactly what I'm talking about when I say negative ratings blurs the line between stupid and unpopular. You'll be ignored just for having an unpopular opinion. You won't even be able to justify your opinion because you won't be heard.

+/- ratings creates gang mentality too. People are likely to -1 a post that is already way below and vice versa.

If one wanted a sullen peaceful board, where all are in agreement, then bite the bullet, believe in god and hit some xtian boards. Nice and peaceful ... until some damn atheist shows up.
