I have to wonder if being surrounded by death didn't make the self-preservation instinct that much stronger.

Yet he risked his life several times, by forgering documents to save people and giving information to the polish resistance.

Read "Is this a human" by Primo Levi, it is the most detailed account of Ausschwitz by a holocaust surviver, and it gives a very clear view on how ones character and perception changes under such brutal circumstances.

In general, well.... the thing about the Kz`s is that they filled with individuals who had different ways of dealing with this situation.

Yeah...I'm not sure I could stomach reading a book detailing the Holocaust.

you are right. It is hard to stomache.

I grew up not far from Mauthausen until I was 12, and never realised what it was.
When first visiting it I threw up, and the images never leave your memory.

The Holocaust Museum here has a room full of shoes... That's it, just shoes from Jews that were killed in one of the camps. That is more than enough for me, thank you. It's seriously sick that people could wipe out other people like that.

Wilhelm Brasse, who himself was a prisoner at Ausschwitz has died on the 23rd of October.
Being skilled in photography the SS camp administration used him to photograph prisoners aswell as personel. He was rewarded food and his chances on survival were larger than those of other inmates due to this "job".
He made several iconic photos during his time there from which I am sure many of you have seen some before.

Brasse, who had a noted skill for putting his subjects at ease, recalled telling one officer to "sit comfortably, relax and think about your fatherland" before snapping his picture. This image is of SS officer Maximilian Grabner. Grasse received extra food as his payment for the images he took.

I judge things for myself, do my own research, I never believe something that is mentioned at face value until I have researched it for myself, why?, well you might aswell listen to the BBC or Goebbels.
