I know - because The Government wants to set up a totalitarian paramilitary police state and they need to make sure that the lower orders have no means of defending themselves. Seriously, that's why weapons defined into law as "restricted" or "offensive" carry such stringent penalties. What's your take on it?
While you're at it, what is the purpose of laws against illegal drugs, or fissile nuclear material, or anything else that laws prohibit? Now you have my answer to your original question.

seems to be..as sad as it sounds...that it's incredibly profitable for some influential segments of our country....

No problems, that's basically what I was going for; although again I should have made myself clearer on the "nukes" thing (nuclear material, such as plutonium or whatever, was more what I had in mind as opposed to full-on weapons). The point essentially is to define, in a legal sense, what precisely constitutes whatever is under discussion so as to be able to determine if an offense has been committed under the terms of the Act.

I agree, and for my part, I think it;s equally important that the goal of said act be achievable both with what is written into the act, consistent with the platform advanced by those who proposed that it be written into law, and made with full consideration of any other act or law that it may conflict with (compromises have to be weighed adequately). From this standpoint, in my estimation, US gun law is a mess. We regulate things which we needn't, we ignore or underfund regulation which we should emphasize, it all smacks of politcal career-building to me. Make agreeable promises, propose partisan legislature, let it languish on the floor - but ultimately, whatever you do...-do nothing-. Know what I mean?

I think I've pretty much said everything I wanted to on this issue and have little interest in retreading old grapes over and over again, so unless some new angle comes along, perhaps that's for the best.

Except for the ones I keep having to retread because someone either misunderstands or twists my words (I was going to say "grapes" there but I wasn't happy with the image). However, you have the floor. Please tell me what I haven't addressed. Bear in mind that my points throughout these last ten pages have been purely and simply to clarify what the terms and concepts mean from a legal basis, and nothing else. The only times I have offered my opinions on this stuff have been by invitation. If you want to start a discussion about who's opinion is better, then fine, go for it.
