Hello old bean

Well met.
My partner's family are devout RC's too, so we have to keep the fact that we're both atheists quiet. I don't think many of them know we live together either. Lol. Good ol' superstition ; Love atheistforums.org? Consider becoming a patreon and helping towards our server costs.
When people use the term RC or RCC I just can't help but think they mean "Remote Controlled Christians". Oh the irony.
Hi & welcome.
I often find that people in the UK are pretty unjudgmental about religious beliefs; it's the way you act towards other people which is more important. Maybe your family will be more understanding than you fear?

It's funny you say that actually. I think that people in the UK are pretty tame when it comes to having a religion. It's very acceptable to affiliate yourself with any faith and then never engage with it in any way beyond the big social milestones, e.g. christenings, weddings, etc. Fundamentalists and those who are seen as being "really religious" are generally considered oddities. But coming out and saying that you are an outright atheist seems to provoke something in people. It's like you've suddenly broken a taboo and people can be quite odd about it. I suppose that's a common thing across the world but I find it particularly interesting considering the UK is really secular.
Here in the U.S. the word "atheist" has become tainted. Tell someone you don't believe in god, and most will be bewildered, uncomfortable, and perhaps even pity you. Tell that same someone you're an atheist, and they will be horrified and appalled.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
