It's a free country. If they want to spread a message of hate on their own dime, so be it. First, I'm a proponent of the view that the remedy for bad speech is more speech; putting these things out there means they will be discussed outside the hate kibbutzes. Second, I'm also confident in the forces of both progress and innate human morality; the more you push these messages as a necessary part of that religious viewpoint, the more people will move away from both embracing the message and the religious viewpoint.

I believe the artists did just that by first taking it down, then replacing it with their own message. It's like saying "Fine, you got to spout your bullshit, now here's what it sounds like to the rest of us." Urban graffiti vigilantes for the win; in my humble opinion.

History has demonstrated that left alone to their own devices and not criticized enough in mainstream culture, extremists often come to power.

Numerous countries that have fell to authoritarian regimes often started out as a "legitimate political party".

The easiest case example is Germany. The most recent is Salafists in Egypt or Golden Dawn in Greece.

If someone painted racist nazi slogans on a billboard, no one would bitch too loud about someone defacing it.
Maybe a little civil rebellion helps to keep the crazies in check.

Let`s be honest. Who actualy reads the stuff on billboards? When I drive I concentrate on the road.

And if I see a billboard like that, I am more likely to complain because of it`s distracting effect on drivers, due to the enormous mass on words, than to complain about the message.
