Did Bethlehem in Judea exist at the time of Jesus and at the time of David

Did Bethlehem in Judea exist at the time of Jesus and also at the time of David?
Today I got this e-mail:
Paula Fredriksen (sp?, a New Testament scholar featured in one of our Living the Questions segments, informed us this month that Bethlehem in Judea, 150 miles from Nazareth, was non-existent in the first century. There was, however, a Bethlehem in Galilee only four miles from Nazareth, reasonable distance for a very pregnant woman to ride.
Of course, Matthew's and Luke's birth stories are different enough to contradict the veracity of either.
The emphasis on poverty is obvious.
So I Googled the information and I got this from a religious site: http://www.is-there-a-god.info/blog/beli...jesus-day/
And these from a secular site: http://www.religioustolerance.org/xmaswwjb.htm

The religious site bothers me because the only thing they have to back up their claims is a small bullet

I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise
