I don't know which dictionary you've been using, but I go by this one:
assumption:
Quote:as·sump·tion
[uh-suhmp-shuhn]
noun
1.
something taken for granted; a supposition: a correct assumption. Synonyms: presupposition; hypothesis, conjecture, guess, postulate, theory.
2.
the act of taking for granted or supposing. Synonyms: presumption; presupposition.
3.
the act of taking to or upon oneself. Synonyms: acceptance, shouldering.
4.
the act of taking possession of something: the assumption of power. Synonyms: seizure, appropriation, usurpation, arrogation.
5.
arrogance; presumption. Synonyms: presumptuousness; effrontery, forwardness, gall.

Belief:
Quote:be·lief
[bih-leef]
noun
1.
something believed; an opinion or conviction: a belief that the earth is flat.
2.
confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof: a statement unworthy of belief.
3.
confidence; faith; trust: a child's belief in his parents.
4.
a religious tenet or tenets; religious creed or faith: the Christian belief.

I fail to see that they are the same...

All I'm saying is that if someone hasn't ever fallen, they wouldn't know. They'd only have a belief based on evidence.

Yes, they would.

Don't simply compare words, try and understand the meaning behind them.

The first definition of assumption is "something taken for granted". In our discussion, "something" refers to a statement, such as "there is no god" and "granted" would then refer to taken to be true without looking for proof.

Belief, means something believed, that is, to take a statement as true. Do you still not see how they are same?

No, sorry.
An assumption has no truth value attributed. It just is.
A belief does.

What are you talking about? To assume something means to take it as true.
