North Korea...suicidal, or attention whore?

They would as a result end up being nothing but a pile of ash.

Well, that and the nuke is only about 6 kilotons, a fraction of the power of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

And besides, they can barely fuel their military, how the hell will they be able to fuel anything that could move the nuke?

Knowing what I know about North Korea, I can hardly imagine that anything they do would end up better than this:

China will have to take them out.

And if China will let them carry out a nuclear attack, then China must be reduced to ash.

The real one at stake is China. They control North Korea. It is their satellite state.

Kim Jong Un is playing a very dangerous game here, and I strongly suspect he's bluffing (assuming for the sake of argument that he's actually capable of making good on his threat).

US policy is to respond in kind to nuclear attack. With the threat known, the US has undoubtedly already analyzed the situation, selected potential targets and the necessary yields to reduce them, and all that remains is for the orders to be given to arm and launch the birds.

Would the US actually follow through though? I think so. The nuclear deterrent is only a deterrent if one is actually willing to use the weapons in retaliation - should there be any doubt of that, the deterrent value of the US nuclear arsenal is substantially reduced in value. I can't see a situation where the US would allow a nuclear-armed rogue state to hold it hostage, particularly after said state launched a nuclear attack on the US or one of it's allies.

Kim Jong Un must know all of this, and therefore I can only conclude that he is bluffing - or insane.

Whether or not we respond in kind, the situation is a shit sandwich. Want that on wheat or rye bread?

He's emboldened because the Communist Party in China is deeply involved with the Communist Party of North Korea.

Why fear when you have China to step in and protect you when you're about to lose?

The Korean War taught us as much.

Err isn't China in the throws of a stoush with Japan (friend of UDoA)

Just wondering if the Senkaku Islands issue may be behind this threat/ bluff? China does seem itching to 'up the anti' in the area.

No doubt about that, Moros. I'm guessing that he wasn't expecting to be thrown under the bus by China with respect to sanctions. (Then again, I wouldn't put it past China (or anyone else really) to openly condemn NK while continuing business as usual).

I can't see China wanting to get involved in this. Mushroom clouds are bad for business, and for good or ill, China needs the US as a trading partner to stay healthy.

Agreed.

However, just because China likes money, trade and order doesn't mean it's overdue for it's next insane Great Leap Forward. Which if I recall, had no constructive basis in fact and was instead purely done out of illogical ideology.

The real kicker is it could be caused by some high ranked asshole's cult of personality (thus eliminating the sensible actor out of MAD)...

I wouldn't worry about North Korea's nuclear threat until they work out the issues with their guidance systems...
