All definitions of the word "church" that I can find seem to relate to Christianity directly... so, yeah, using the word "church" doesn't help their cause.

I'm guessing they call it that in an attempt to piss off the fundies, or perhaps it is to lure out those people that don't believe in god but still enjoy the social aspects of church.

I thought the organisers called it "The Sunday Assembly"? I have seen it being called the "atheist church" before on another website. I think it is the journalist calling it an atheist church.
