"cobbled together" would be a misleading way of inserting parity between competing hypothesis. Notice that in all of this there's an assumption....and that very assumption is something that others might (and do) contest.

There isn't even a clearcut history of the narrative (partly because stories are kind of elusive in this regard), in fact - the history of it's contents is in much less doubt than the history of it's manufacture.
