Reason for asking: I've been told by thoughtful atheists that looking for logical contradictions in Christian beliefs, or within the pages of the Bible is a waste of time. The explanation given is that there are much better reasons to give up on being Christian. I'm just wondering what the better reasons are so I can try them on and see how they fit.

Intelligent persons - even in the days of Plato and Socrates - were/are perfectly capable of living a moral and ethical life . There is nothing in xtianity in that regard that cannot be learned and used without belonging to it. IN fact - there is NOTHING new in that regard that did not come from even older religious groups. The so called golden rule existed in the Vedas a couple thousand years before the supposed time of the christ. The added rituals and beliefs of religions outside of morality and ethics are of no basic use to an intelligent person.

So - the question is - does kneeling down or standing up or crossing your fingers do anything that adds to your life? Prayer has already been exposed to have no effect beyond chance - so it is a waste of time as well.

Worse- religion has turned out to be an incredibly poor charity - since most of the money it collects is used for administrative purposes - and does not actually reach needy people. The amount of money wasted on religious ceremonies that have no inherent value - could wipe out hunger in the world - and still be enough to fund all sorts of medical research into actually curing people of illness - something praying will never do.

And then there is another question - why are YOU moral to begin with.

Religious people apparently need the promise of a reward for being moral - and a punishment for not being moral - in order to be moral.
Non -religious people are moral for the most basic of reasons - it is the correct thing to do - and they do not need a PRIZE.

So - the question is - are YOU capable of using your own intelligence to lead a good moral and ethical life? IF you can - why do you need to pay someone to read ancient myths and legends to you? If you cannot - maybe you should save your money and go to school.

Given the number of thoughtful people who became Christians, or at least called Jesus' teachings "the most sublime and benevolent code of morals every recorded," how do you know you met a thoughtful atheist?

Since the code of morals did not originate with that character - and did exist in lots of other ancient religions and teachings (Like Buddha abd Confucius) - why can't you use those examples to lead a good life - and ignore that the christ myth was a plagiarism.

Worse - those teachings include why a slave should be subservient to his master - and why a woman should be subservient to men - among other things that xtians often overlook in their religious beliefs. IF you call this sublime and benevolent -maybe you do not know what those words mean.

People who make claims like that often have NEVER actually read the bible to see what is in it. And it is the thoughtful atheist - according to studies - that actually has - and rejects it because of what xtians try to ignore.
