MMORPG's & Online Gaming

RE: MMORPG's & Online Gaming
Second life is awesome! It is one of the few MMORPG's that allow you to create things with your mind!

I would say that it is only barely a game and is more like a chatroom with a very advanced GUI.

This one pager is funny if you ever played secondlife:

My favorite quote from the website, "Why can't I build a dirigible with my mind?
"

I created a costume for myself that looked like a giant shoggoth, floppy tentacles and all. It bothered me how commercial most of the places were, but many of them have tons of free (Read: broken) merchandise they had. Planes that won't fly, walking mechs that won't respond to spoken commands, that sort of thing.

You can do lots with SL, but It's too much of a mixed bag for me overall though. It isn't focused enough for my liking. Yes you can do shitloads of stuff, but nothign really well, it's not specialized enough for me. When I have used it, it's been okay...seems a bit quiet, but when you get more SL friends it must get more enjoyable I think.

I listened to a Live gig by the band Long Range with Phil Hartnoll from by favourite band, Orbital, Live there once. That was really cool.

As for RPGs in general, I've never been big on role playing at all. Way too slow going for me. RTS is perfect speed for me Big Grin

A dirigible is a type of hot air balloon that is designed to resemble a football with fins in the back and a carriage attached to the balloon instead of the typical basket that hangs down. A mech is a battle platform that uses legs to move around. They usually have two legs in either humanoid style or chicken-walker style. I have played games that had four and six legged varieties. Some mechs have torsos that rotate allowing the pilot to travel in one direction but shoot in any direction. Think AT-AT (Huge four-legged jobs that were brought down by tow cables on planet Hoth) or AT-ST (Scout walker) from starwars.

They dress up and then have battles. There may be a hundred or so people doing it. Used to a friend and myself would go and park in the parking lot and watch them while we smoked pot. It was great entertainment.

This is called Live Action Role Play or LARP for short. I was involved in making armour and weapons for these people, though I never participated in LARP . It might not look it from the outside, but there are very strict rules to this, and getting weapons in specifications and still look good is one hell of an undertaking. Our best selling weapons were Katanas (we were one of the few that actually got the curve right, even with the carbon rod center, and still looked sleak) and frying pans (don't ask me why, we made them as a joke weapon once and the became the hottest selling item at a major LARP event in the UK).

btw: a dirigible is a kind of a blimp if you are more familiar with that term.
