Hello and welcome to AF, where we are your kind of crazy! ^_^
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

RE: Jehovahs Witnesses nearly got me!
Hi there! Even as an atheist in a Christian family I am concerned with losing relationships and even one disowning me when they figure out I've made up my mind on the matter. I also had a friend in high-school tormented with his sexual orientation and the JW disowning rule. He tried for year's because he loved his family enough to suppress who he WAS and who they knew him to be since elementary school; it simply blew my mind when I heard that they finally did disown him eventually.
In any case, Welcome! I'm newish to atheism but I've found a network of very good sane people here and I like it alotSmile it helps with the things that give you up as a result of nonbelief..
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

(I can't believe I'm about to type this)

C'mon guys! Don't lie! We don't actually kill babies... we have a great deal with Planned Parenthood. They do it for us.

(Okay... kill me now.)

Welcome!

Hi, Welcome.

I'm sorry to hear you were raised JW, as you can probably imagine we Anglicans and most Christians despise them and especially dislike their heretical practises.

The topic of ex-communication is Biblical. 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15, Titus 3:10, 1 Corinthians 5:1-2. The problem with the JW's is that they take it well out of context. Disown your own family members? Yeah, I really don't think that's what Paul had in mind when he wrote those epistles...

We all seem pretty unanimous on jw's. I'd be interested to hear from one in defence of their ways. My story along with many others in the same boat spreads a very bad reputation for them and makes their religion look like a bit of a maniacal cult. Not very good for 'spreading the word' as they call it.

Anyway, I don't want to get too hung up on jw's. I'm an atheist, no apologies because I'm very sure that atheism is the truth. Enlighten me if you disagree!

Yes well it still needs to be said that their extremist beliefs are not representative of Christianity. It would be great if your parents converted to Christianity ... then they could talk to you again.

I know its an obvious question, Aratacus: but do you think that maybe, just maybe-- had these families never come across this book of Moroni, then this family wouldn't have ripped itself away from their own son/daughter/brother/sister? Seeing as how this religion seems to take its beliefs from your book, then maybe just maybe the problem isn't that people are misreading your book; the problem is that your book claims to be the word of god. Honestly, what god would even leave such ambiguous BS knowing the people he cReated would end up doing this to themselves because of it?
