Addiction to the hard stuff truly takes a mastery of oneself to break away from and stay free. Worry not too much about your wife's reaction - you're seeing irrational fear over a boogeyman. Facts are not in play here. It will fade if you don't mention such and distract her with other things. A lot of people do not like to be reminded of their fears. Paradoxically, they try to rev back into it. Act as if it's a non issue and involve her in other, more engaging events. It'll disappear from memory soon enough. Slave to the Patriarchy no more

It sounds to me as if you took the right steps, so even if things didn't go as well as you'd hoped, in the long term you're much better off.
