It's not inexcusably offensive; it's not against the rules. It's just annoying and that's why we have guidelines against it. Sometimes it's annoying because you try to reply to someone who no longer hangs out here or the subject of the thread is no longer a current event. Sometimes it'll take two pages before the people replying to the thread realize it's old. That's why there's a big red banner at the bottom of the page warning that the thread is old.
It doesn't matter when the subject of the thread is something like "AF Members As Cat Memes" or "What's Everyone Up To?" but when the subject is "George Bush Jr. Claims There Are WMDs In Afghanistan" it's ridiculous.

Especially when people complain that a topic has been overdone, and a newer person wants to talk about it.. they're not allowed to bring it up? Either they start a new thread on the subject and some people complain that it's been overdone, or people complain that it's a necro post. It's hard to come up with completely original stuff, but what Becca said, if people aren't there to respond or it's old world news then, it can be annoying.

9 x out of 10 the OP is no longer around, making responses redundant in as many cases.Sure it can stimulate conversations again but it's much better to start a new thread (perhaps even linking to the old one) so both new and old members can approach it from a freash angle.
Also, 'gainst the guidelines.

Only any problem if posts directly addressing members since departed.
Should really be an observed nuance. There's times when necroposting launches a subject past where an original post could bring it... and there's times when it's simply fun for reflection. Fresh angle just isn't as interesting to me as coming back and seeing where I was years and years ago  It's mostly a fun happenstance... it's a nice tool for sharing an experience, and reading some of our threads? It's an experience worth having
