Encouraging intelligence in our youth!! Finally!

I'm ambivalent about it because of their stance on homosexuals and atheists, though our local groups are very liberal in these regards. I've been looking into Camp Quest as an alternative. There's some things I like (co-ed, secular), but my hang up is that Camp Quest isn't as widely recognized as the Scouts. When you're thinking ahead to college applications, being an Eagle Scout carries weight in that arena, whereas the Camp Quest equivalent does not. I'd happily send him to CQ, but would like for his achievements to be recognized as they are with the more popular Boy Scouts... Perhaps it will be by the time he gets to college application time... But application credit or no, he'd still have the skills... Decisions, decisions.

No doubt! My son is only 4, and I hadn't considered the things you mentioned as reasons for boy scouts, but they are indeed good ones worthy of consideration. I think that even if my son were only able to go even for one summer, once he's 8 or 9, just to get exposed to it in a social setting, one that doesn't encourage a disbelief in God, but at the same time, doesn't view the path that leads one to atheism as taboo. Real free thought! I do not wish any sort of beliefs to be impressed on my son nor will it be a ploy to discourage him from exploring others, I just want to see to it that he is well equipped to adopt logical ones and apply good reason to them. This sounds like the perfect exposure for such a start, and the encouragement from someone other than Dad,would perhaps activate an eagerness within to reach for what he once percieved as a limit. I'm from Texas and grew up in a Christian household. There's only 2 things that weren't to be questioned in my house ( 1-The Dallas Cowboys are the best team in the NFL.; 2-God is responsible for everything.) Nowadays, i'm not sure about either, but I still entertain the idea of the first one. Lol, funny how life works. Good luck, and I wish you the best with whatever you choose!

Our goals / Demonstrate atheism and humanism in a ....... the word demonstrate means to show by reasoning, prove / sounds to me like they are to impose a theory, they cant prove and they have put a system in place to do it, sound like smells like, looks like a tastes like a religion to me ! HAY TEACHER LEAVE THEM KIDS ALONE ,sorry could not resist it

Dude...You're really reaching for someting that is just not there at this point. You see that right? How do you infer that anything is being "imposed" first of all, and secondly... You aren't really calling Atheism a theory now, are you?

Yeah, but we'd have to learn from the masters.

Why is it that people try to make atheism sound like a religion to discredit it? Well, I mean, I know why, it just seems like it would involve a certain amount of cognitive dissonance.

I was in Constantinople/Istanbul the other day, I went to see the temples, out of morbid fascination, the largest is Hagia Sophia and was built for the god Neptune as the many original stone carvings express , of course later it was Christianized but then later the Ottomans plastered their beliefs over the fresco's , so if you atheists nead teaching on how to build temples its your pagan cousins you should seek help from.

I mean fuck me, really? "Pagan cousins"? You've got more in common with pagans (NONSENSICAL) than we do, man. How does a lack of a belief in a deity thus then = being a pagan?

Is there a button on your keyboard that says "engage brain" before typing?

I think there's only one person on this thread that should be seeking help, dude.

...I don't even know how you tied atheism to any of this. Do you understand what atheism is?

The dictionary tells me an atheist is someone who believes that there is no (G)od , and God being the Supreme Being, creator and ruler of the universe. But no where does it say an atheist does not partake in a religion, as a religion is a system of belief in, worship of a supernatural power or (g)od . And a (g)od is a superhuman being worshipped as haveing supernatural power ie: Neptune worshiped by pagans, of course these (g)ods are myth, but there is a (g)od of this world who pagans/non-believers, by there own systems of belief, can and do worship, and that is mans adversary Satan. Now atheists can not admit to this, because all religions have idols and the idol of non-believers is the enmity towards believers, which is overwhelmingly apparent and to deny it is futile, Therefore (G)od who is not a respector of men, does not see a pagan or an atheist any differantly, and therefore nor do I, and by the way catholics are a mixture of paganism and Christianity as are Christians mixed with catholicise etc etc now before you swell with hate towards me, take into account, this is not my summation or a vain opinion I concocted, but this is what the scriptures + dictionary say, but just like you atheists/non-believers "christiandom" hate me aswell, and will refuse to believe their own Bible, as they also have there idols which they cling to for dear life. The day all men hate religion is the same day all men will love each other, which is part of Gods plan, and that is to for us to turn from evil haveing learned what it is, so we can understand what is good, what I write is just a tiny fraction of Gods salvation plan for all men. ps: of course I expect this scriptual inspired report to be met with scorn and bias and lots of it, so go ahead knock yourselfs out, as I find it amusing.

Sweet!

Quote:Through our programs, we seek to: Demonstrate atheism and humanism as positive, family-friendly worldviews.

Eh.

I see no difference between this and a Bible camp. Other than this "atheist camp" will increase your intelligence. But it's still a camp of preaching. I don't think I'd send my kid there, even though I agree with everything they think.

It sounds like you're trying to justify your hate towards atheists by assuming all atheists hate you back.

I do not hate you, but I do hate the stupid things you say. There's a big difference.
