I have yet to find a corporate entity that aren't dicks, legal department and otherwise. And whether they're assholes or not doesn't have much to do with their food being safe.

The GM process is very different from the process of selection or cross-breeding.
I wish people would learn how GM crops are actually crafted.
Selection and cross-breeding are non-invasive ways of manipulating the resultant plant through natural methods whereas the GM process uses radiation to cause small holes in the cell membranes and then have bacterium insert genetic code into the cells.
We have seen some truly wonderful things from GM crops, and some people have benefited from the changes. The real problems are with the legislation around the crops that allow for patenting and then when a strong wind blows some of the GM pollen into your field you are then forced to pay for your next years seeds because the terminator gene technology from the Monsanto crop causes all your crops to yield non-viable seed. These types of things would be akin to someone placing beers into your fridge, then making you pay for them against your will.

Oh and the beers would make your home brewing stop working, so you would have to buy your next beers from Monsanto. Also, if you DID buy beers from some other vendor, the would slowly turn into Monsanto beers and then Monsanto would charge you for drinking their beers without paying for them.

Just a comment, but I think they use virus as opposed to bacteria to insert the new genes.

The main reason for the bann are their practices in buisness and the unavoidable bankrupcy of the European agricultural sector which would be the result of letting them in.
not the GMO`s
The European parlament actualy allows GMO`s within the European market:

Those who oppose letting Monsanto in here are mainly agricultural interest groups such as farmers who want to avaoid the american style industrialisation of the agricultural sector.

The method is different, but the particular objective and resultant effect which anti-GM crowd witlessly abhors in one case but not the other is much the same - purposed creation of crop with genome that differs substantially from plants found the wild for the purpose of increasing yield and palatability.

I'm not one to abhor GM crops, I just wonder if the methods they use to alter DNA directly might cause health problems down the road.
