The five "R"s that probably inspired the invention of god and religion:

At some point (who really knows when), man decided to invent god. Here are the top 5 reasons I can come up with that probably motivated him to do so.
#1. Regulation - Controlling the masses
#2. Reward - Immortality
#3. Reunion - Spending eternity with deceased friends, family, and loved ones
#4. Reason - Purpose
#5. Retribution - Enemies and the immoral must suffer
I listed them in the order that I think most compelled man to invent god and religion, but I could easily see them in a different order.

Actually, probably not.
"I know what you are thinking about,' said Tweedledum: 'but it isn't so, nohow.'
'Contrariwise,' continued Tweedledee, 'if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic." ~Tweedledum and Tweedledee discussing the finer points of logic

I think the first religions were the result of utter powerlessnes.
Being a stoneage inbreed fucktard who barely managed to not lose a tooth each year and has no knowlege of anything outside his narrow field of actions I would sooner or later start worshiping a wolfgod to prevent wolf packs from ripping me appart.
Of course I wish the movie Thor was based on a true story.

Just inviting discussion about the invention of god and what may have been the most compelling factors leading to that invention.

I see. So you believe fear was the most compelling factor?

Evidence?
All of this unsubstantiated speculation about the motivations behind the religious and religion is just playing into the stereotype that non-believers simply don't "get" religion. Remember, bare assertions are not good foundations for an argument.
Regardless, I find it much more likely that religion began as primitive man's attempt to explain the world around him, and these five "R's," as you put it, were incorporated later on.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

I love you.

I would go with fear of death, an explanation of why things happen the way they do, and how to explain to the young ones what happens when a loved one dies.
Control would have been important when the clan grew too big, making it difficult to impose rules and regulation without more policing.

look at rural communities, religion can offer a base for people to meet and connect and build bonds.
several communities throughout the american south, in which no other methods and places for social conecting are not provided are held together by their churches who do not only provide the mass but other events which can bring a community together.
If this should be debated, then it is important to stay objective. even when some of us like to solely concentrate on religions negative effects.
religion is not only a simplicistic way of totalitarian crowdcontrol - it can provide the services required to give a community stability.
