Foreign Intervention in Syria?
June 5, 2013 at 5:39 am
The goverments of France and the US have announced that they are now convinced that the Assad forces have been using Chemical weapons against rebels.
The use of chemical weapons was deemed to be the red line which shouldnt be crossed by the Obama administration.
At first it looked like the Obama administration had set this red line invane and that Assad was at first testing and then mocking that red line.
Recently it has been announced that a bigger contingent of US troops will be deployed to Jordan.
Could it be that the US and it`s allies in the Arab world (Jordan, Saudi, Quatar) are gearing up for an intervention?
Would such a intervention be ok?
What should such an intervention be like?

If chemical warfare is an issue, then it would be difficult to explain why we -wouldn't- intervene.
On the other hand, as far as I'm aware, Syria is not part of the CWC.
My humble opinion of what intervention like this (knowing full well that it carries no weight) should be....is the forced cessation of hostility between the two parties (if needs be firing in both directions and soaking up munitions from all comers) - alongside the destruction of all chemical weapons. Then we roll out and let them resume whatever ridiculous shit they're going to resume regardless. I know, I know, a horrible concept of intervention - stressing neutrality, achieving a clearly stated humanitarian goal, and then leaving people to make their own policy decisions without our boot on their necks - all at great cost with little to no material gain on the part of those who intervene.

The US always surprises me. It sees no problem attacking pointlessly countries like Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia. But when there is a credible humanitarian crisis like in Syria where Assad is butchering entire towns, mining the escape routes so that you can see women and children being blown 50 ft in to the air simply for trying to escape the violence, the US sits in the sidelines. Meanwhile, Russia is about to deliver surface to air systems to Assad's thugs because Russia obviously has no problems watching civilians being suppressed in such a ruthless fashion. Kudos to Qatar and Saudi Arabia though for looking the other way as suicide bombers and militants enter Syria and also for shipping heavy weapons in from Eastern Europe.
Although to be fair to the US, they did "liberate" Libya, the country with the highest number of suicide bombers in Iraq, Benghazi is practically the capital Islamist militants.

The problem with invading Syria and deposing Assad, is then what? There are no credible factions on the rebel side. Whoever takes control of that country will most likely be as bad as the present regime, if not worse.

The hypocrisy of us over chemical weapons is amazing. We did quite enough of that ourselves with Agent Orange in Vietnam.
As far as Syria goes? Fuck it.

I think that Iran will certainly interven once a intervention is getting started by arab countries. Or at least, that is what I fear.
But I also think that the arab nations should start taking out their own trash, so an intervention should be lead by an arab country.
Other than that, the "civil war" between shias and sunis has been going on since Hussains head went rolling, so it wont end in the near future and the current crisis is simply a small chapter in this neverending and sad tale.
