The Veggie Thread...for news items regarding ALL aspects of food production.
This thread is created to make it easier to put any food production news items in one spot. With the current alarm over food security and the useage of GMO I find many items in my news feeds that may be of interest to others on this forum....

So.....

This is 2 years old.

UN expert makes case for ecological farming practices to boost food production

Quote:8 March 2011 – Small-scale farmers can double food production in a decade by using simple ecological methods, according to the findings of a new United Nations study released today, which calls for a fundamental shift towards agroecology as a poverty alleviation measure.

“To feed 9 billion people in 2050, we urgently need to adopt the most efficient farming techniques available,” says Olivier De Schutter, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food and author of the report, entitled “Agro-ecology and the right to food.”

I have put this in the Monsanto thread but thought it could also go here.

Quote:A skyrocketing demand for food means that agriculture has become the largest driver of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental destruction. At TEDxTC Jonathan Foley shows why we desperately need to begin "terraculture" -- farming for the whole planet. (Filmed at TEDxTC.)

Jonathan Foley studies complex environmental systems and their affects on society. His computer models have shown the deep impact agriculture is having on our planet.

RE Apples...get an excerpt from "Botany of Desire" there a bit in there about a literal forest of "ancestral apples" I'd pay good money (or shoot good people) to have seen myself.

Take that "aquaponics" setup, go vert, enclose it in a shut in gas well heated greenhouse - and you have my business model. You know what I've found to be the best growing media? "Coco-peat" shaved shredded coconut husk. It doesn't degrade very quickly, it's sterile, it holds water, it's chemically inert (from the pov of the consumer-the plant), it's "all-natural"......you should give coco peat and aquaponics a try, tailor made for Australia (and it's a great excuse for a hobby koi pond).

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

My thought exactly Rhythm! Currently using the coconut husks as organic matter to boost a very sandy soil. Would normally use pine back to increase moisture and fertiliser retention but it is getting way too expensive for our current budget. There is also sugar cane mulch that I am currently trialing which seems ok but not ideal. Pleased to announce that I am currently cropping Roma tomatoes .... No they are not as big or sweet and juicy as summer harvest but for our meagre needs they are enough. Thumb up

The question of aquaponics for me is just where I can squeeze it into my tiny outdoor area. Got some ideas but allot more has to happen to finish off our house before I can find funds to go that route. Bought myself a Blueberry bush yesterday! Zen is very pleased as we both love the tiny blue fruit. A quick bit of research stipulated ( from one company) that manure should not be used.... I am guessing that they mean FRESH manure. My greatest successes have come from aged/ composted cow poo.

Loving the idea of a Koi carp pond as the base for the aquaponics though. Big Grin

Just finished "Botany of Desire" and agree with you. All our apples in the major food chains have been harvested and cold stored for at least six months (if not more) Dodgy A good point raised in that book is also the issue of storage and distribution adding to the cost of food and I personally would love to see food towers in all our capital cities. The best that we have at the moment is Community Gardens and some adventures into sidewalk veggie patches. Sadly our major cropping areas have had very little rain and are doing poorly, which is why I scoff at the vegan utopian ideal..... At least for Western Australia.

The one thing we cannot do is crop grains at home of an amount to even satisfy a family's needs year round.

This guy (never seen him before) has a point. It appears that the majority of objection to GMO foods is nothing more than anti-Monsanto propaganda with NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT said position. Not exonerating Monsanto here: but as Zen pointed out................"be angry @ the fuckers for the right reasons, not the emotional bullshit"
