No one here can speak for everyone here, nor give assurances of everyone else's good behavior. (Expect the worse.) I for one agree it is a false dilemma.

I'm not which user you thought was being bashed, the agnostic or the believer. The agnostic seemed like a poe feigning moral ambiguity about child abuse in order to imply some things about homosexuality. The believer seemed upfront convinced there is something wrong with homosexuality. I only read several posts but didn't find anything very bash-full. Did you think that first post was the abusive one?

The "bashing" posts were further down. The point I would like to make is that being a Christian or an Atheist does not directly make one more smart or stupid. I want to get that out of the way before I engage in the deeper things.

Welcome to the forums! As one new guy to another, I think you'll enjoy your time here. If an atheist starts picking on you, that's just simple bullying, so don't stand for it. Walk away from the insults...don't feed the assholes.

I was trying to find a video for you on YouTube that illustrates an actual study done to show that Christians are just as intelligent as Atheists. It basically showed that any belief does not diminish one's IQ, rather, it merely influences the choices a person makes in his or her life. I found it very helpful when trying to account for all the intelligence-insulting accusations being thrown around between both parties. One conclusion some people come to is that Christians don't require the same standard of evidence that most Atheists do, simply because faith in a higher power is not based on any demonstrable proof, but God-fearing people are okay with that. If you do have proof for your faith, do not hesitate to bring it to the table; you will almost always start a deep, intellectual discussion that way.

Enjoy your stay!

Being a Christian or an Atheist makes one neither automatically stupid nor intelligent, and I'd like to think there are more options than that - it's a bit of a false dilemma, no?

I think it is a false dilemma, but like I said I read a thread on here where Atheists were bashing a Christian they had not met based on second hand knowledge from another Atheist poster. The thread link follows,

Well, it's true second hand knowledge can be and is often distorted - but we can still comment on it. On top of that, he provided something more concrete, a link to a study, for people to discuss. Now if he said "Because of this experience of mine with a christian ALL CHRISTIANS are fucking stupid" and people agreed with him, based on his experience alone, then I would object. But I don't see much of a problem with what went on in that thread; you could argue we don't know if the christian is an asshole based upon what he said, but calling him an asshole was not central to any atheist's argument.

You make valid points. I for one am as annoyed by the "just have faith" mentality of most modern day Christians. Being a student of history I know that Christians have made huge contributions to Science. However, I know that Atheists have mostly taken over the institutes of Science and turned it to their biased worldview, but that is no reason for a Christian not to wade into Quantum Physics. I find that kind of stuff fascinating, and it doesn't conflict with the Bible at all.

I already know that most Atheists take a dim view of Christians intellectually, and I believed this thread pointed it out beyond a shadow of a doubt, but it seems anything can be denied. So let me restate the reason I pointed to that thread and posed the question I did. Christianity and Atheism have little, to nothing, to do with one's intelligence.

Mhm ... climate change is crazy talk, atheists taking over "institutes of Science" and quantum physics doesn't conflict with the bible... right. Great start, it'll be difficult not to take you seriously now. Welcome.

Welcome.

We who are intellectually free are lucky, not more intelligent. I believe there isn't a single one of us who, under the right indoctrination, wouldn't be rolling on the floor imagining that we're speaking in tongues.

I haven't read the rest of the thread yet but that's my immediate answer to your question. Whether or not you are part of any religion is a matter of indoctrination, not intelligence.

If you lived anywhere else in the world, you might be a Muslim or Hindu.

I think the atheists found valid problems to the christian's argument . . .

But so it's clear - I agree, you are not automatically smart/stupid/inbetween/whatever based on whether or not one is a Christian, Atheist, Jew, Hindu, etc.

Neither. It usually only means you were indoctrinated from childhood like I was.

I wasn't going to be taken serious anyway because I have the C word next to my Religious Affiliation. I might as well introduce myself with a Big Bang right? Atheist humor, get it? Well, Evolutionist humor, but most Atheists are Evolutionist. Unless you believe in Panspermia? O_o
