RE: The Last Movie You Watched
I should mention that my initial pick for this week's entry in the Deep Hurting Project was, tragically, already checked out by some other poor bugger. Fortunately, with quick thinking, I decided to pop in my copy of Highlander. It was fairly good, even if it was pretty dumb (immortal Scotsmen chopping each other's heads off, anyone?.) I was thus properly equipped to take on its sequel Highlander 2: The Quickening. Upon its initial release, it was widely considered to be one of the worst movies ever made, due in no small part to the fact that, well, the fans of the original hated it for totally messing up the film's continuity and having enough plot holes to fill the Royal Albert Hall (most notably, having the Immortals come from the planet Zeist), and people who didn't like the original hated it because, well, the plot made no sense (seriously, the villain's plan involves making the hero immortal, and then coming back to Earth to kill him when he not only becomes mortal again but is old enough to die of old age with no plans to return; General Katana is actually told how dumb his plan is TWICE, but he doesn't listen either time).

One episode of The Spoony Experiment I can remember includes this infamous rant about how badly they fucked up the continuity of the film within the first twelve minutes:

Quote:"NONE OF THIS MAKES ANY SENSE! Why is Zeist never mentioned a single time by anyone in the first movie? Why doesn't McLeod recognize Ramirez at all when they meet in Scotland even though they got married on Zeist? Why does Ramirez have to explain everything about immortality to McLeod when he was listening when sentence was passed on Zeist? Why do the other Immortals want to fight anyway if the prize sucks so bad? Why are there other Immortals if Katana only sent McLeod and Ramirez to Earth and he specifically ordered his men to kill all the other rebels? Where do they come from?! Why are they immortal on Earth and not on Zeist? What the fuck is the Quickening? What's the deal with the glowing orange juice? What the fuck is he writing on McLeod's head? What's the significance of the Gathering? Why can they telepathically sense deer, and why is this never mentioned again? Why does McLeod have no idea how to fight even though he's an intergalactic freedom fighter? Why does this make even less sense than naked Sean Connery throwing axes at a floating zombie head? WHY AM I IN A STARFLEET UNIFORM?!?!"

Well, fortunately, Russell Mulcahy had enough assets to change the Planet Zeist into the distant past for the Renegade Version (which is the only version to be released on DVD or Blu-Ray), but seven minutes into it, while they changed the Planet Zeist into the Distant Past, Sean Connery's first line was "Free People of the planet, hear me." And making it the distant past actually makes General Katana's plot make even less sense, because, well, you sent them forward in time to become immortal, so why would they go back to be killed? The script is very confused. There are three people credited for writing the script, in addition to the character credits for Gregory Widen, and it looks like some of them couldn't be bothered to put any care into the script, especially how poorly it fit into the continuity of the first movie, but at least one of them was aware how fundamentally broken the whole thing was and decided to have them point out exactly how fucking stupid the whole plan was (especially since, once again, the villain has to be told exactly how stupid his plan was TWICE in the movie, and how Virginia Madsen tries to work out the random nature of immortality in this film.)

Apparently, the original script was better, and may have even covered up some of the blatant plot holes I've mentioned before, but the insurance companies, of all people, decided to take over production (after it went over budget) and turn it into utter shit, rendering the backstory utterly baffling. Things, of course, were not helped by the fact that they filmed in Argentina as its economy started to go all pear-shaped and, also, the fact that Christopher Lambert insisted on Sean Connery being part of the film, even though his character died in the original film. Apparently, he still tried to walk out of the production, but contractual obligations forced him to stay in. And remember that big rant I posted earlier about how badly the movie fucked up the first twelve minutes? At the world premiere, Mulcahy only lasted 15 minutes before storming out.

Christopher Lambert's Scottish accent in the original film was laughably bad, but now, it's even worse here now that he's playing an old man. If you've ever watched a mob movie where there was at least one old mafiosi who was at death's door, for whatever reason, Christopher Lambert is using that voice. Or maybe some old Jewish guy. Or Old Man Bugsy Siegel. And why do General Katana's henchmen look like porcupines?

Also, this may very well be the dumbest use of the William Tell overture in the history of cinema:

Also, the Psychic Cook scene and that in-flight video hint at some sort of media satire, but what it's trying to say eludes me.

Is there anything good about it? Well, Sean Connery's always good, even if he has no reason to be there (let alone that his big resurrection involved him being spontaneously appearing on a stage turning "Alas Poor Yorick" into a shitty vaudeville routine), and the sets look like a Tim Burton Batman film. And that scene where Katana hijacks the train and makes it go to MACH ONE until it crashes out of a brick wall is pretty funny (even if that doesn't jibe with my understanding of public train systems, but maybe the MTA is different from the CTA and some of its terminals are brick walls.) It's not a lot, but at least it's something.

One of the most intense movies I have seen in a long time.  A must see!

I watched the War of the Worlds, the one with Tom Cruise. That movie is still awesome, even if some of the CGI doesn't hold up very well.

The first emergence of the aliens was cool, after that it was just another chase movie.

It sort of left me with the morally ambiguous feeling that the protagonist wouldn't have given a shit about the fight for the survival of the human race if it hadn't directly impacted his family. And it also left me with the feeling that the protagonist would be a morally smug asshole who would tell me that I don't understand the fight for the survival of the human race because I don't have children like he does, and he would tell me that right after I have stepped forward for a suicide mission after having just barely survived a previous likely suicide mission.
We do not inherit the world from our parents. We borrow it from our children.

Tom Cruise films are one of the (few) things I am bigoted about.  I assume that anything with Cruise in it is going to be a waste of my time.  I realize that this is blatantly unfair to Mr. Cruise and all the other people who work on these films, but I just can't get round it.  He's not an actor - he's a movie star and his films reflect it.

"Green Card" I actually enjoyed it, a lot. Essentially a two hander, the two leads are terrific.

However, the black critics tore it to shreds. One saying it was just another film about black people for white people. I didn't see that in it, but then I'm white, how would I know?

I keep forgetting that virtually everything in the US is connected to race, or made about race.

I often wonder how many more generations  will take before US whites are forgiven/forgive themselves for the evil of slavery.

'James Bond And The Raiders Of The Lost Terminator', aka 'Deadpool 2'.  Idiotic, derivative piece of crap.
