Geist, a 110-pound Weimaraner, was loose in Kendall’s backyard when an officer entered the fenced in area in search of a missing child reported in the neighborhood. According to the officer’s later account, the dog then “approached [him] in an aggressive manner. The officer, in turn, shot the dog.” Geist died from a single gunshot to the head.

The CHP did not identify the circumstances leading up to the encounter, but released a statement saying it was under investigation.

“As a matter of policy, every time there is a use of force by our officers, there is a review conducted to determine whether the use of force was appropriate,” the statement read.

And right here is the problem. Whenever cops investigate themselves the cops are always found to have acted appropriately.

I seem to remember a case in St. Pete, late 90's, about cops justifying this internal investigating business as a "jury of peers" issue. The gist being that it takes a cop to know what a cop was going through-and so assign punitive measure (so forth and so such). I've wondered since then if cops in Tampa Bay think that citizens aren't their "peers" - and thought that if they didn't, that probably explained alot.

Why is it so hard to hire good citizens as cops and not hire scum bags to keep the streets safe? Maybe it should be harder for people to get a job as a police officer, but also earn more money for being that trustworthy reliable person they should be.

This type of behavior deserves worse than suspension. Fire him obviously. That is assault and he should be jailed until bailed and then put on probation like everyone else.

I once lived in Cookeville TN, and in 2002, perhaps '03, we made national headlines when a couple cops shot and killed a dog of a random family traveling home after the holiday. This type of crap has been allowed for way too long and there is no excuse for it. They get slapped on the hand and usually get to keep their job in which they've already proved they are unfit to work.

In short, they are selected according to a baseline of criteria and then cop culture molds them into the us v them bastards we see beating the shit out of people.
