The problem is that so many cops get it in their mind that a suspect is guilty, and they just can't let go when they realize they are wrong. After the Xray they should have determined that they were mistaken and let him go.
It's just like that one case where there was a murder of a young girl and the cops zeroed in on (I think it was) her brother and interrogated him for something like 48 hours telling him that he committed the murder and eventually getting him to sign a confession. I wish I could remember more details of the case but it was a documentary I saw a few years ago.
Same goes for all the Satanic Panic episodes during the 80's like with that one day care where the cops had determined that it was being run by a Satanic cult who were abusing kids on a daily basis. They brought the kids in and basically told them what to say and then got convictions based on the kids' witness testimony.
I realize the system says "innocent until proven guilty," but all too many cops believe in "guilty until proven innocent."
