Denver homeless man’s family awarded $4.6 million over death in county jail

The family of a homeless street preacher who died in a Denver county jail was awarded $4.6 million on Tuesday by a federal jury who found five sheriff’s deputies used excessive force to subdue the U.S. Army veteran.

The suit accused five deputies with the Denver Sheriff’s Department of a “massive over-reaction” when they used a choke hold and stun gun to control the 5-foot-5, 135-pound Booker.

“The deputies then carried Mr. Booker’s limp, lifeless, handcuffed body into a holding cell, where they put him down on the floor, face down, summoning no medical attention,” it read.

Autopsy results concluded Booker died of cardiac arrest and listed the cause of death as homicide. The Denver District Attorney’s Office declined to pursue criminal charges against the deputies, saying the use of force had been justified.

Some day in a distant futures maybe district attorneys will stop saying that the fucking cops are always justified. In the meantime it is the taxpayers who pay for these motherfuckers' crimes.

My reaction is 'fuck the FBI.'

While the companies' actions are understandable, Comey said, "the place they are leading us is one we shouldn't go to without careful thought and debate."

Oh, does he mean like the careful thought and debate which went into the NSA snooping operations on the entire fucking world?

Three words: "get a warrant". Four more words: "get a court order".

The courts are certainly empowered to compel suspects to decrypt encrypted devices as part of discovery when appropriate. With the device in your custody, it's not as if the suspect is going to tamper with it.

Maybe you fuckers should have gone on fewer fishing expeditions.

Another Day, Another Death: A Mother Dies in Prison After Reporting Threats

Ellington wrote that an officer -- identified only as Sergeant Q. -- "was gone[sic] beat me to death and mess me like a dog." She added, "Auntie, no one knows how to speak or say this man's name. But he goes by Sergeant Q. and he works the B Shift a.m. So please call up here."

Jennings said she was already fearful for her niece's safety because Ellington previously had described repeated incidents of abuse, both against Ellington and against other inmates.

In response to the letter, Jennings called the prison. Jennings said she was assured by a correctional officer that they would "look after" her niece.

Less than 24 hours later, Ellington was dead.

Three lawsuits recently filed in federal court accuse the state of Alabama of denying prisoners with easily treatable illnesses or injuries proper medical care resulting in the prisoner’s death.

According to AL.com, the lawsuits have been filed over the deaths of three inmates, including a 19-year-old who died naked on a cell floor from gangrene.

The three suits allege the jailers in Madison County withhold the basic medical care in order to save money, believing that the insurance carried by the out-sourced medical contractor will cover any lawsuits filed against them.

The family of high school athlete who was pulled over and forced to the ground at gunpoint over a seat-belt violation has filed a $12.5 million lawsuit against the Waycross, Georgia police department contending the officer involved was only given a slap on the wrist for his actions, according to News4GA.
