Calif. cop won’t be charged despite stashing seized marijuana at home and lying about it

A Richmond, California police officer was allowed to testify in several criminal cases despite being under investigation for mishandling 5 pounds of seized marijuana, Richmond Confidential reported.

Defense attorneys accused the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office of violating ethics rules by not informing them that Officer Joe Avila was under investigation while continuing to use him as a key witness.

“They are cutting him some slack because he’s a police officer,” said the county’s chief public defender, Robin Lipetzky. “Anybody else found with 5 pounds of marijuana in their possession, I don’t care who that is, that person is going to be charged with a crime.”

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A man who can't use his arms because of a spinal condition is being held in jail while facing a gun possession charge his lawyer calls shocking.

Bail was lowered Tuesday for Marcus Hubbard, who has been jailed since his arrest in Trenton in August.

Defense lawyer Caroline Turner said the case against Hubbard, who injured his spine in a car accident and may have Lou Gehrig's disease, "shocks the conscience."

"How could (he be) held for four months on a gun charge?" Turner said during the bail hearing. "He cannot move his arms. They are useless to him."

The chief doesn't seem to know what is going on in his department.

KUT also reported that Acevedo suspended two officers caught on a dashboard camera making jokes about rape victims, including the statement, “Go ahead and call the cops. They can’t un-rape you.” The officers were given three-day and five-day suspensions, respectively. Acevedo said these comments belong to an “extreme minority” of officers in his department.

In 2007, the sheriff thought only that he was dispatching a goon squad to harass and arrest two long-time journalistic troublemakers. He was wrong.

Arpaio arrogantly and foolishly arrested Lacey and Larkin for an article published in their weekly paper, as well as for details they disclosed of a wildly over-reaching subpoena against the newspaper, one that asked the publication to reveal the internet identities of anyone who read the paper online, as well as the other sites readers has visited.

It was ridiculous, silly, and dangerous, and it led Lacey and Larkin to file a lawsuit.

The lawsuit, in turn, led to a $3.75 million settlement from the county.

Colorado to pay $3 million to family of mentally ill prisoner who died shackled facedown on floor

The Colorado Department of Corrections will pay $3m to the family of a mentally ill prisoner who died in a state facility while guards watched and after a nurse ignored him.

Christopher Lopez, 35, died at San Carlos correctional facility in Pueblo in 2013. He was suffering from hyponatremia, a condition that occurs when there is not enough sodium in the blood, but prison staff ignored his seizures and shackled him to a restraint chair, thinking he was being intentionally unresponsive.

Do not give me that crap. Police tend to overlook it when a husband is speeding for his pregnant wife, especially when it might take longer for an ambulance to arrive. If a cop does not overlook it, it is merely because the cop is being an ass and taking it out on the soon-to-be new parents.
