Your misunderstanding of atheism is even worse than the majority of theists.
If a person hates gods, then they are, by definition, not an atheist.
Atheism is the absence of belief in the existence of gods. How can we hate what we do not believe exists?
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

I would hate Joffrey Baratheon, a fictional character, mostly because he shares many of the Christian God's qualities. But I can't, because he's not real. And my lack of belief in Joffrey's existence has nothing to do with my opinion of his personality.
