Being an independent does no good whatsoever as long as their are no viable options.
Study the laws on a state by state basis which any third party candidate would have to navigate and you'll soon see that the deck is stacked against them. Perhaps fatally.
Ballot Access Laws

He has been trying to pass reform bills, a lot of this is not his fault. I disagree with him a things but I mostly agree with him. His efforts to get the gun issues under control were blocked by NRA and republicans. He tried to fix health care and they messed that up cause of the republicans that are in bed with the big pharmaceuticals company's. His believe in affordable higher education went out the window because of the republicans in bed with the banking industry. It's not all the republicans fault though, democrats have done damage as well. Lyndon B Johnson, Richard Nixon, (I give him credit for trying to get healthcare to people), Ronald Regan, George Bush Sr, George Bush jr all started the downfall of the country on the republican side. Now to pick on the democrats here. Harry s truman, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton added some of the damage as well. So, it's kinda of a 60% republican and 40% democrat split on who broke moms favorite cookie jar.

Insofar as Obama basically carried the Bush / Cheney / neo-con policies on for eight more years, I have little use for his Administration. His health care reform was feeble, benefiting insurance companies and drug manufacturers as much as anyone else. He is Wall Street's best friend and protector, and his Free Trade agreements are as damaging as anyone's. I would not have minded so much if he had gone down fighting the Right Wing in this country. But he laid down and begged them for "cooperation" and they kicked his ass anyway. He went rouge with his drone wars, executing thousands of innocents on some kind of a whim, and never saw a police state tactic that he didn't aprove. The left wing likes to say that "it could have been worse" under a Republican President but, fuck, it couldn't have been much worse. Obama turned out to be a complete waste of an historic opportunity to change the direction of the country, and I am starting to think it was the last opportunity that we will have. From now on it it is straight into the shitter.
