I wish there was hell for these kind of "people".

Therein lies its appeal to alot of the religious, the idea that those that wronged you or did heinous things will get punishment for it. It makes people anxious to know that there are people that do harm and may get away with it, but the hard reality is that there are people that die of old age, even after doing real bad things. So appealing is the conforting lie.

I found myself using that phrase myself when talling about cases with more public attention surrounding the sentencing of people who commited horible crimes.

But I came to asking myself, Why should one accept prison to be some kind of resevoir in which people can rape and murder each other out of sight from the rest of the public.
It's not that I wish prison was a place where people go to die, normally. But if these two got off of the charges, I would wish something terrible to happen to them too. I think they deserve death, but death penalty doesn't work in practice, so I wish they'd die some other way.

I happen to be completely against the death penalty.

As Holly Near stated, Why do we kill people to show people that killing people is wrong?

I simply view the death penalty as a form of the primitive biblical mantra an eye for an eye. Surely, as one of the most intelligent lifeforms on the planet, we can find ways to humanely punish without the need for killing.

I don't see the justice system as a system for punishment, just a system that removes the dangerous people from others and also to deter others from doing illegal things. Death is a pretty good deterrent. But really in this case, it's not about the justice system with me, I just, these two are just such horrible things, I don't want them among the living. It's like what wwjs said about wishing there is a hell for them. But there isn't, I'll settle for death.

This part particularly pissed me off...

Quote:In mitigation, Stephen Linehan QC, for Luczak, had asked the judge not to "snuff out" hope for her. "This young woman came to this country hoping for a better life and now she is facing a life in prison. She has lost everything. Her situation is truly desperate."

Maybe she should have thought about that before she was torturing her own son.

Yeah. If that is really the best the defence can come up with you know there is something seriously wrong.

I'm sure there will be loads of people willing to adopt him who will give him a better chance at life. Fucked up way to start life though - I hope he turns out ok.

One of the issues of Christianity is that these two can still be saved while I'll be tortured for all eternity for saying "for god's sake" from time to time, coveting my boyfriends new 27 inch computer screen and that lie I told when I was 12...

Edit: some spelling. Stupid fat fingers. I should just set that up as my signature.

When the pair believed he had misbehaved they threw him into cold baths and his mother once boasted that she had almost drowned him, while his sibling, who cannot be identified, reported that they had once seen the boy's head being held under water.

How can anyone do that to another human being (especially her own child)?

My only problem with the death sentence is the fact that the justice system is not perfect and sometimes imprisons innocents incorrectly. What happens if they justice system finds out someone they put to death was actually innocent? You can at least free a man wrongly imprisoned...not so much can you bring someone back to life from death.
