What can we do to promote Atheism? How can we unite?

A less controversial idea is to ignore the braying jackasses. Maybe a continued policy of marginalizing their self important rhetoric will foster change.

By the way...promoting atheism isn't on my radar. Diminishing religions' stranglehold is. Kinda the same purpose, though.

Great idea! I will sure scare the hell out of em in my area. Haha.

The problem is, if we do nothing, we as well shall be always in minority without any luck of changing this world into a sane place again.

Maybe its time we grow some huge balls, (zeez, i though Athiests had the biggest balls, I'll have to change that view now, pretty scary huh).

All in all, yes not promoting Athiesm, but uniting and keeping ourselves strong. We as well can be an influence to the society, and people can see why we do it and why its much more feasible. Smile

Nor do I. But it would be a great thing to unite like once in a week locally to have fun. We need to keep sane too. Religions have festivals, gatherings and such, why not us? Wink Of course the answer is we're nothing like religious people, but think of changing the world, if we stay and do nothing, we will be more oppressed sooner or later by religion. So why not now? Wink
Gatherings and stuff hmm... I know there are atheists groups out there, they've never appealed to me before.

Why not us? because we have very little in common. The only thing atheists have in common is the lack of a belief in god. But I wouldn't mind joining book clubs. I think it'd be cool if in every neighbourhood there're things like weekly book clubs, astronomy club, history club, things like that. So you go every Sunday, learn something new or teach something, and then have lunch together. So that these sort of social activity is available to the nonreligious. But atheist gatherings, I mean, what do you do there?

Edit: Probably not a good idea to have those kinda clubs on Sunday, that excludes believers. I don't like segregating religious and nonreligious, I want the religious to learn how to coexist with others and not push their ideas on others.

Let us leave the descrimination for the religious folk. Discrimination is something else I feel strongly about and fight against. If I say "no theists allowed" how is that better than a guy who says "no homosexuals allowed"

I am not better than a theist dude because I believe something different from him. I am simply different.

Edit: But an AF get together does sound like fun. It's a shame we are all spread so far across the world.

And the same can be said to religions. They have one thing in common: They believe in God.

I like your idea of making book clubs , etc. They sound good Smile

Yes, we should include them if they want to tag along.

Yes, we're in the same position with theist. But I believe we're more sane and open minded than them Smile

And yes, we should not discriminate. I agree with you. I was silly(what was I thinking? Maybe too much patriotic? Tongue ) awhile ago to say we should make it a exclusive group Smile.

Yes AF get together would be awesome. Sadly as you said we're so far apart.

Hm, it's like this. the difference between believers and nonbelievers is like the difference between stamp collectors and non-stamp collectors. Stamp collectors can come together and have loads to talk about and do together. Non-stamp collectors can come together and say, "oh, you don't do that either?" And then what else is left?

I don't think it's really possible to promote atheism.

It's the default position, so really the old adage of teaching kids how to think and not what to think will do more than any campaign against religion ever could. In fact I think the latter is neither desirable nor effective, as evidenced by atheism + which just attracted cunts (sorry! Non gender specific douchebags).

Don't worry, it is just a knee-jerk reaction (I felt pretty much the same after watching that video of the guy who said atheists should be taxed). It is important to recognise it and then be willing to change your mind - which you did admirably Smile.

A warning that preaching won't be allowed and that they should only attend of they are thicked skinned to the theist members won't be too far out of line I think.

If someone sets up something for the uk that isn't too far away from me I'll be happy to attend.

Mods - are there any rules against doing this? Has it been attempted before?

I'm in the uk as is Darwinian and a few others.
A few years ago there was a get together in London I did not attend.

Here's my plan. We get a load of atheists to get this:

Tattooed to their ass. Then they all start a career in porn.
