Atheist guy gets out of prison under the sole excuse of enrolling on a detox program.... finds out that all detox programs use religion.... he gets put back in prison.
I see nothing wrong... maybe I understood it wrong...

This has been going on for years. So many court-ordered detox programs, especially AA, require the participant to acknowledge a "higher power."

AA also has an amazingly high failure rate.

Well, it was my understanding that the guy went to his program- was in fact pulled out of a meeting by police when he was put back in jail- and that his parole violation was merely requesting that he be allowed entry into a secular detox program instead.

Which is... you know, wrong. Tongue

If he was playing an out-of-jail card with this thing, he should've just acknowledge the higher power to the fool asking for it. Better chances of success, and there is no atheist dogma that says we should always tell the truth Big Grin

Come on. The least he could've done is pretended to believe in Greek mythology.

I also would not have surrendered to acknowledging a higher power.

It was not as though he could have asked for a secular twelve step program, because his attorney most likely informed him to simply go along with whatever was offered in the beginning to appear more compliant. Pathetic, really, but that is how the imperfect justice system operates.

They should rename the Justice System to Judgement System.

Part of the problem with AA, as I understand it, is that they tell their members that they're too weak to become sober, they'll always be alcoholics, and so they'll always need AA. I don't know if it's just so they can keep their numbers up, or like any other treatment group, simply replace their drug of choice with God.
