I don't get art...

RE: I don't get art...
I like urban aesthetics. I guess that's how you'd put it. I love nice buildings and neighborhoods, new and old. I also like certain trees, such as cherry trees and certain pear trees, and how they blend into the landscape if done correctly.

But, I'm not a gallery goer.

I appreciate beautiful things very much. The things in that article aren't beautiful things.

But ugly (or dilapidated, actually) can be beautiful too. Smile

When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Kayenneh, I consider those beautiful as well. Big Grin

I'll come out and say it: I don't get modern art.

Art is anything that works, just like in evolution, it is neither work or luck, but BOTH.

I have seen paintings labored over I think are crap. I have seen others that are simplistic that I like. I have read books that are wordy that I hate and others that are layman that I love. I have read poetry that is wordy that I love and poetry that isn't rhyming that I love.

Art is neither the acceptance or rejection of the simple or complex, but your own personal taste. It depends and is highly subjective.

I get art...

... If it is mine. I believe art is not in the eye of the beholder, but it is in the eye of the creator. No religious folk (the broken), not your creator.

If my art speaks to anyone but me, then drugs must be involved.

Now I'm interested, do you have a link to any of your artwork? Big Grin

A lot of modern art is pretensious bullshit, Jackson Pollocks "blue poles" is a classic example.

But you do still see a bit of good stuff from time to time.

Has anyone seen the crucifixition one with children crucified to their attackers?

Extremely powerful work.

RE: I don't get art...
I think art is the result of a genuinely creative act. That isn't to say there isn't plenty of 'art' out there that is derivative, formulaic or just ineffectual. I also think that the primary beneficiary of creative acts is the artist herself, not the viewers of the art work. If anyone cares for ones artwork they should count themselves very lucky, even more so if it furnishes them a career. Anyone who thinks they can tell you what is and isn't art beyond their personal taste is full of shit.
