Thanks Smile I'm feeling a lot better today. Not nearly as much pain.

I also finally got the best friend I ever had back in my life as my best friend again today, so I'm feeling really happy despite everything else. It's one of those best friends in high school -> romantic couple for 2.5 years -> her breaking up with me because I was an idiot and asshole -> not talking to or seeing her for years due to a combination of me realizing what an idiot and asshole I was and working on myself, and fear of her rejecting me again -> overcoming my fear and reaching out to her a couple years ago -> working on our friendship in stages during that time until it culminated in her coming over this afternoon and us talking for 3+ hours like we never missed a beat things. She has a long time boyfriend and I'm legitimately happy that she's happy with him. I love her, I've always loved her, and I always will love her, but I'm not right for her in a romantic capacity. And I'm okay with that. I won't risk falling into the old patterns of behavior that pushed her away before, which is the best thing for both of us.

But I'm just ecstatic that I was able to undo a lot of the damage of the past. It took a long time, many heart-to-heart conversations over the last couple years, but a friendship like this is more than worth that kind of effort. And she told me specifically that she was happy to have her best friend back. So, yay!
