Just got back from Taco Hell. Sitting around watching the Family Feud.

Having a... disagreement, let's say, about how the Jonetown massacre went down on facebook.

Poster characterized the members as "willingly" drinking the flavor-aid.  I replied that I thought that characterizing a coercive act as a "willing" was disturbing.  She responded that there's a vast grey area between "coercive persuasion" and "free will" and is trying to justify her characterization by saying that they clearly had no choice therefore it was a willing act.  I pointed out that no one I know would call an action performed at gun-point a "willing" action.

So far it's been fairly congenial.  But she just wrote back so we'll see if it stays that way...

That's odd. If she acknowledges that they had "no choice," how could she then conclude that they were willing? I don't know how to resolve a disagreement with someone who thinks like that. Are you sure you're not inadvertently talking to Drippy or GC?

How do you follow the train of thought of anyone who's trying to explain their religious beliefs? Just when you think you're in the engine, you find out you're in the caboose. It sounds like she has a definition for "willingly" to which we are not privy. Just like Adam and Eve "willingly" ate the forbidden fruit even though they had no sense of right and wrong.

Oh, I suppose I should have included in my description of the discussion that she's an ex-Mormon and probably somewhere in the atheist realm. And she's writing a book in which the tithing/Jonestown connection will feature. She's, I think, trying to build a case that coercive persuasion is used to get Mormons to pay tithing in the same way it was used in Jonestown to get people to drink the cyanide which is why I was confused to begin with when she characterized the People's Temple members as being "willing" to drink the drink.

I haven't responded to her anymore.
