As a physicist, I am annoyed that we don't use heat pumps more commonly here. Is there an excuse to uee devices with efficiency <=1 as long as it is not below freezing? I don't know how you get down to *no* fuel burned though.
I just shudder at the thought of having my house heated via central air, not a very pleasant kind of heating if you ask me. Also, I just assume that all American houses are uninsulated cardboard boxes and hence wasteful by default
Well, perhaps I was a little to free with my language. Where I live, an overwhelming percentage of electricity is generated by hydroelectric power. Hydro power here is plentiful and very very cheap (under $0.09 USD/KWh).
Insulation varies. A house that was built 50-70 years ago isn't going to have much in the way of insulation unless it's been updated, but newer construction is better.
I actually used very little power last winter. It was admittedly milder than average, but I don't think I even turned my heat on until late November last year. In fact, right now, I have the windows open (it's currently 57F outside, it would be over 70F inside otherwise, and I've not had the heat on since last March. I live a bit north of 45 degrees north latitude.

Odd, when I had a house, it was concrete block. Best kind of house you can have imo. I don't know why anyone would choose to not have central air if it's available. In the wintertime I like a nice warm 67 while in summer I opt for a nice cool 69. Being American has me spoiled I suppose, but I can't stand to be hot and I really really hate to be cold.

Up drinking coffee, can't sleep. The two might be related.....
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

My back is threatening me.
"I see you there, sitting up in your chair. Make a sudden move. Sneeze, I dare you. Yeah, go ahead, tie your shoes you bitch."
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Have you had an MRI? I have this issue too but I have a ruptured disc.

Since I hit 40, which is already a disgustingly long time ago, I have this issue too. Nothing to see on all the medical tests, but probably a legacy of me being a medic in the early 90ies. Doesn't do your spine any good to lift overweight people.

I'm only 26, but my poor spine has been through a lot.
